Inconsistent, erroneous "File in Use" message when opening files on the network
I am inconsistently getting a “File in Use” message that is faulty – the file is not open; according to our file server, it shows that the file is not in use when we have checked the Share Folder Management > Open Files. When we try to open the file it states, “(File name) is locked for editing by ‘another user’. Open ‘Read-Only’ or click ‘Notify’ to open read-only and receive notification when the document is no longer in use.“ I polled the users who are connected to this file server to see if they also receive this error – only half seem to notice this occurring. This has happened with old existing files, and files that were newly saved (from an email attachment, or created from scratch, etc.) It seems to only happen to files on the server share. Sometimes, clicking Cancel and trying to open the file again allows the user to open the file with no “file in use” message. What could be causing this faulty message? Is there a setting that can be adjusted on the file server to try to eliminate this from happening?

Hi, I would like to know if the issue only occurred on Windows 7 computer? Please understand if other users disconnect shared folder, the session won't be disconnected immediately. Therefore, I suggest adjust "Limit the number of simulates users" to the shared folder. 1. Right-click on the share folder, select Properties, and switch to Sharing tab. 2. Click “Advanced Sharing” and you will see the item “Limit the number of simulates users to". 3. Just adjust the number to see how it works. Also, please open an elevated cmd windows on server and type the following command to change the autodisconnect time. net config server /autodisconnect:1 The issue also could be cause by incorrect permission. Please check both Share permission and Security permission to ensure everyone can access it. If the issue persists, I suggest disabling Security Software and firewall on both sides.
